They are still available for those with severe cases of addiction who have tried to maintain sobriety over a long period of time and need the structure of this situation to help with a lifelong commitment to staying clean.

But, what has changed are the number of residential and outpatient drug abuse clinics that have sprung up to help those who need a less restrictive environment or have been using a shorter amount of time, who need family and friend connections to stay sober, or who are single-wage earners or single-parents or others with functional jobs.

One can see this on the TV shows that have sprung up about celebrity drug addicts who spend time in such facilities that are less restrictive (have cameras and camera operators around) and encourage interaction among patients.
