The aggressive medical treatment of tinnitus first involves discovering
the cause for the ringing in the ears before a cure or remedy
can be recommended. People with tinnitus describe a ringing, buzzing,
whining or hissing in the ears that ranges from mild to severe.
The underlying cause of tinnitus runs the gamut from ear infections,
wax buildup, medications, allergies or a response to loud noises.
The medical treatment of tinnitus will involve the discovery by
a healthcare practitioner of whether the condition is objective
(least likely) or subjective (most likely).
In objective tinnitus the ringing in the ears can actually be
heard by another person. In most cases, however, tinnitus is subjective
and can only be heard by the person with the condition.
The most aggressive treatment for tinnitus is actually prevention.
Working in a location filled with loud noises such as being part
of a rock band or employed by a construction company requires
ear plugs to prevent tinnitus from developing. The medical treatment
for tinnitus follows along the same path as for hearing loss including
the use of hearing
aids along with other modalities.
Some of the common causes for tinnitus include otologic problems,
sensorineural hearing loss, ototoxic medications such as analgesics
and antibiotics, use of psychedelic drugs, neurologic disorders
such as multiple sclerosis or head injuries, metabolic and psychiatric
disorders.
Aggressive treatment for tinnitus may call for clearing earwax
from the canal or gamma knife radiosurgery if the condition is
objective. Medical treatment for tinnitus that is subjective can
range from using certain pharmaceutical drugs or nutrients such
as ginkgo biloba, zinc, melatonin, or benzodiazepines.
Other medical treatment for tinnitus includes electrical stimulation,
surgery to the perilymph fistula, external sound stimulation,
and psychological remedies such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
Some of the famous people with tinnitus include Beethoven, Eric
Clapton, Garrison Keillor, David Letterman, Steve Martin, Leonard
Nimoy, William Shatner, Alan Shepard, Barbara Streisand, Pete
Townshend and Vincent Van Gogh.
